It is safe to say that Indian television and daily soap operas are inseparable. In today’s time, we are so heavily flooded with video content that it has become difficult to filter out personal favorites. The popularity of fictional dramas among many, especially women and the older generation, has resulted in newer shows, with unique characters and interesting plot lines. For several years, the most common kind of leisure content has been daily soaps, which follows a certain storyline day after day and is meant for continuous watching.
Among the many television shows currently running, a common favorite is Zee TV’s popular family drama Kumkum Bhagya. The show’s characters are relatable, family-friendly and appealing. Premiered in 2014 as a love saga, the storyline mainly revolved around the love story of Pragya and Abhi, starring Sriti Jha and Shabbir Ahluwalia as main leads. The plot starts with Pragya and Bulbul helping their mother Sarla Arora run the Kumkum Bhagya marriage hall. Numerous twists, turns, love triangles, and complications bring Pragya and Rockstar Abhishek ‘Abhi’ closer.
Their friendship-turned-into-love-story runs a course of several years, during which Pragya exposes Abhi’s ex-girlfriend Tanu and wins Abhi’s trust. Meanwhile, Abhi meets with an accident and loses his memory and forgets the previous two years of his life, including Pragya. Eventually, they meet again, however, Abhi still does not remember Pragya. Slowly, Abhi regains his memory but loses Pragya as she is shot by some goons and falls into a dam. During the course of the show, Pragya recovers from coma and reconciles with Abhi. However, an unfortunate twist of events lead Pragya getting blamed for Abhi’s grandmother’s death and she is asked to leave their lives.
A few years later, Abhi and Tanu are living together as friends, while Pragya is living in UK with her love-child with Abhi, named Kiara. A certain plot in the story brings Kiara and Abhi face to face and now Abhi knows about his daughter. Abhi eventually remarries Pragya. The show takes a 20-year leap and gradually concludes with the reunion of Abhi and Pragya, however, they are now supporting their own respective children.
Kumkum Bhagya has been running successfully since over five years and is now accompanied by a spin-off show called Kundali Bhagya that airs right after the show. It features familiar characters from Kumkum Bhagya, but revolves around the life of Pragya’s two sisters, Preeti and Srishti.
